Design

The Fleet drinking fountain is the first design for the public realm by designer Michael Anastassiades. Inspired by the language of classical columns,  The Fleet embodies the precise poetry that characterises Anastassiades’s work and is distinctive of his ability to distil an object to its essential form.

Following in the tradition of London’s robust Modern street furniture design, The Fleet consists of a rolled bronze column topped by a spun bronze bowl and bubbler spout. Operated by a push button, the arc of water is an integral element of the fountain’s sculptural composition and can both fill a bottle and be used for direct drinking.

This first production model is manufactured in the UK and is suitable for use indoors and outdoors, providing an appropriate contemporary addition to the public realm and any setting that requires something more refined than a standard drinking fountain. The polished bronze finish can be maintained or allowed to develop a rich natural patina over time.

“The design is a monolithic form that references the great tradition of English street design, from lamp posts to post boxes and telephone booths. Here I wanted to make an enduring design that would stand out but also blend away - something approachable that could be used every day.”
